The Top 3 Energy Hacks

“The higher your energy level, the more efficient your body. The more efficient your body, the better you feel and the more you will use your talent to produce outstanding results.” - Tony Robbins

It’s no secret that when it comes to optimising our physical and mental health – hacking the energy available to us is the starting point. The source of our energy?

It all lies in one of the most important body parts most of us have never heard of – Mitochondria. Mitochondria are microscopic organs within cells that act as micro power plants responsible for generating ATP (adenosine triphosphate – the currency of our energy). There are a quadrillion of them in our bodies. The quality of our energy, our health, our life are dictated by these mitochondria. Thankfully there are ways to optimise their function

These are my top 3 hacks!!!

The primary food source for these mitochondria is oxygen. However most of us aren’t breathing properly. In sedentary lifestyles most of us can be spending 12-14 hours a day sat down forcing us to breathe in a shallow manner into our chest throughout the day as opposed to breathing deeply into the diaphragm. This can reduce oxygen intake up to 30% meaning our mitochondria are going to be a third less effective – this is huge! So if you want more oxygen, remember to sit tall or stand tall as if you’ve got a book on your head. Chest up, chin down. Breathe into your diaphragm. I want you looking like Superman or Wonder Woman. Breathe and hold yourself like the most powerful version of you.

That’s right, it’s time to get cold. A cold walk, a cold swim or even just a 30-60 second cold shower after your warm one. What would be just as effective as having a fully functioning and effective powerplant? Having more of them! The cold offers a healthy type of stress similar to exercise and can be responsible for a lovely scientific process called mitochondrial biogenesis, which simply means making more mitochondria. The cold switches certain genes on to do this and demands for more energy factories to be made! By having more mitochondria, we of course increase our aerobic capacity and our endurance increases. The cold also releases a neurotransmitter in the brain called Noradrenalin/norepinephrine responsible for promoting high focus and vigilance – The perfect way to eliminate brain fog!

Fat Burning Hero

We have 5000 calories in the form of sugar immediately available to us now. But we have 140,000 calories available to us in our fat stores. When we’re burning sugar over fat, our energy can go up down like a rollercoaster throughout the day, and depending on what foods we eat – we can tire quickly. If our brain realises we’ve burned 1000 calories if we’re running on sugar. It will send a signal to the rest of our body as “we’re low on fuel” After all we’ve burned 20% of our primary energy source. However if using fat as our primary energy source, we can burn 1000 calories and feel fine as we’ve only burned 0.7% of our energy. Lebron James, Rich roll, Mark Allen (the fittest man on Earth) all burn fat as their primary food source over sugar. This allows them to have extraordinary endurance to go the distance and maintain stable energy throughout the day. This involves a diet high in good fats e.g avocados, nuts and high quality oils, A tonne of veggies and removing foods high in sugar.
